£70k SSE ‘legacy’ fund opens for Brora

A £70,000 community investment fund is now open for applications from local groups and initiatives in the Brora area. The one-off fund is a goodwill commitment made by SSE as part of its Gordonbush wind farm development.

The ‘legacy’ fund is open to community groups and charities operating within the Brora Community Council boundary to progress a project that will deliver a lasting, positive benefit for the local area.

Groups and charities with proposals that they feel could deliver a lasting legacy are invited to come forward, provided they operate within the Brora Community Council boundary. Applications will be gathered from Friday 13 February in a two-stage process, with the first stage deadline on Friday 3 April. If no single suitable project is found, multiple projects will be considered for funding. Applications of over £30,000 are sought and funding decisions will be taken by a local advisory panel.

The £70k funding pot will be provided in addition to the main Gordonbush community benefit fund, which distributes around £160,000 per year to the Brora, Golspie, Rogart and Helmsdale areas. A similar legacy project was funded in the Golspie area during 2014.

Kathleen Cunningham, chairperson of Brora Community Council and a member the local advisory panel, is confident of an enthusiastic local response. She said:

“What an amazing opportunity to help bring a successful, sustainable project to reality. Having a two stage application will allow groups some preparation time to consider project potential and, importantly, the chance to access further guidance prior to completing a main application form.”
